- What were the factors that contributed to Precious having low self-esteem?
The main factor is where her mother often discourages her and calls her names. For her to be growing under such a way of living, it is very hard to see her gain her self-esteem. (Family issues)
Strangers taking advantage of her in the streets.
Her not knowing what her talents were and also being afraid to speak up for herself.
- What signs of low self-esteem did Precious display?
When she was being abused, she would imagine herself being a super model where everyone praised and loved her.
Another sign would be when her mother yells at her, she would keep to herself; she often believe her mother was right about her.
- What defense mechanisms did Precious use to avoid dealing with pain? Give examples.
Suppression- Because she would distract herself in her own little world of being a model when she’s being discouraged or abused.
- What neurotic needs did Precious over-use or display? Give examples.
The neurotic need to restrict one’s life within narrow borders- Because obviously she didn’t like to take credit for things that she did.
She didn’t look deep enough to see what her talents were and didn’t reach out for the things she wanted.
She had the ability to do well in school but she didn’t believe she could have because of her low self-esteem.
- What helped Precious increase her self-esteem?
Being inspired by Blu Rain, her teacher; she helped her through a lot and helped her gain the courage to do what she wanted to do. Her new classmates, as well as the people around her, showing her love and care made her alive again. And lastly, she wanted to finish her education to receive her high school diploma showed that she knew she could do it.
- What signs of higher/increasing self-esteem did Precious display?
She stood up for her rights against her mother and left home to relive her life, her being able to write and speak up more in class.
Also trying to get her diploma to continue her education.
- What did you learn from the movie?
I’ve learnt that not everyone’s lives are perfect, but it’s up to us to live a good life. Precious was once being discouraged about life and herself but she found her ways to live her life.
Also, to be in that position is not an easy job. No one is perfect, but everyone has their talents. We just need to dig deep to find it.
- Would you recommend the movie to others? Why or why not?
Yes, because it let us have a clearer view of what’s happening in the society these days. It can also teach us a way to help our friends or people we know that are in emotional needs.
It helps us be aware of our surroundings and gives us an idea to change the world to its original nature.
